In vitro fertilization (IVF) can be an emotionally and physically challenging process, often marked by moments of discouragement. For many individuals and couples, the journey begins with hope and excitement but can be fraught with complexities that test their resilience. At Pittsburgh Fertility we are creating families centered on you. We strive to turn your dream of parenthood into a beautiful reality.
Medications need time to work, and two simple procedures are involved. Eggs need to be extracted from your ovaries. A semen sample is needed. And the resulting embryo(s) have to be transferred to your uterus.
You’ll take medications to help stimulate, grow, and release mature eggs (oocytes).
Once your ovaries have produced mature follicles, it’s time for an in office retrieval procedure under light anesthesia. (This is a low-risk procedure, but mild cramping after is common.) During retrieval, we use an ultrasound-guided needle. Once follicles are housed in a tube, our embryologists assess the eggs for maturity before incubating them.
If a male partner is providing semen, we’ll collect a sample. Or, if you decide on donor sperm, we’ll use that. The sample is washed to isolate the most mobile sperm and a procedure called ICSI is used to fertilize the egg.
The egg that is inseminated with the sperm is placed in a dish with a special growth substance that gives them nutrients. Once the egg is fertilized, it becomes an embryo. This grows and divides in our lab for five to seven days.
After embryos reach the blastocyst stage (typically day five to seven), they are carefully evaluated by our embryology team. Healthy, viable embryos are then frozen using a rapid-freezing process called vitrification, which safely preserves them for future use. When you are ready for transfer, the embryos can be thawed, selected, and placed into the uterus during a frozen embryo transfer cycle.
At Pittsburgh Fertility, your first consultation will take place via TeleHealth with Dr. Sheila Ramgopal. During this visit, you’ll have a thorough discussion of your medical history, lifestyle factors, and any previous fertility experiences or challenges.
Gain insight into your reproductive health and prepare your body for treatment. This includes fertility evaluation to assess reproductive potential and identify challenges, as well as hormone therapy to balance hormones and support conception.
After your diagnostic workup, you’ll have an in-person appointment with Dr. Ramgopal to review results, discuss fertility options, and create a personalized treatment plan. This session ensures you feel informed and supported every step of the way.
